Kata ganti resiprokal: each other dan one another

A2 · DasarKata ganti

Each other dan one another menunjukkan bahwa beberapa orang saling melakukan sesuatu, bukan masing-masing kepada dirinya sendiri.

  • Arti each other dan one another dan cara keduanya menyatakan tindakan timbal balik
  • Mengapa each other dan one another bisa saling menggantikan dalam bahasa Inggris modern, berapa pun jumlah orangnya
  • Cara membentuk kepemilikan: each other's dan one another's
  • Mengapa “saling” bukan mutually, dan mengapa preposisi seperti to dan with tidak boleh hilang

Ide dasarnya

Each other dan one another adalah kata ganti resiprokal (timbal balik).

Bandingkan: “They helped each other move the couch” berarti setiap orang membantu yang lain, seperti “Mereka saling membantu memindahkan sofa”. Bedanya, “saling” diletakkan di depan kata kerja, sedangkan each other di belakangnya: “saling membantu” → “help each other”. Dan “saling” tidak diterjemahkan dengan kata tambahan seperti mutually: each other sudah mengandung makna timbal balik.

Each other dan one another

Each other dan one another mengungkapkan makna timbal balik yang sama dan berperilaku sama dalam kalimat: “The neighbors greet each other every morning.” “The neighbors greet one another every morning.” Kedua kalimat ini artinya persis sama.

Keduanya bisa diletakkan langsung setelah kata kerja (know each other) atau setelah preposisi (talk to one another, work with each other, care about one another). Perhatikan preposisinya: dalam bahasa Indonesia kita berkata “saling bicara” atau “bicara satu sama lain” tanpa preposisi, tetapi dalam bahasa Inggris talk tetap perlu to: “talk to each other”, bukan “talk each other”. Sama seperti “satu sama lain”, bentuk bahasa Inggrisnya tidak pernah berubah.

"The neighbors greet each other every morning."
"The neighbors greet one another every morning."

Dalam bahasa Inggris modern yang nyata, each other dan one another dipakai bergantian, berapa pun jumlah orangnya: “The two roommates split the bills with each other” dan “The five roommates split the bills with each other” sama-sama wajar, dan one another juga sama baiknya di kedua kalimat.

Jadi kamu tidak perlu menghitung orang. Pakai yang terasa paling wajar bagimu: keduanya benar. Dalam percakapan sehari-hari each other jauh lebih sering terdengar; one another terdengar sedikit lebih formal.

Bentuk kepemilikan: each other's / one another's

Bentuk kepemilikan dibuat dengan apostrof + s: each other's, one another's. “The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam.” “The teams respect one another's effort.” Dalam bahasa Indonesia kita berkata “saling meminjam catatan” atau “catatan satu sama lain”, tanpa tanda kepemilikan apa pun. Dalam bahasa Inggris, 's tidak boleh hilang: each other's notes, bukan “each other notes”.

Other di sini tetap tunggal, walaupun orangnya banyak, jadi apostrofnya tepat sebelum s: each other's, bukan each others'.

"The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam."
"The teams respect one another's effort."

Each other atau themselves: “saling” atau “diri sendiri”

Kabar baiknya, bahasa Indonesia membedakan kedua makna ini sejelas bahasa Inggris. “Mereka saling menyakiti” → “They hurt each other”: dua orang (atau lebih) yang berbeda saling menyakiti, tindakannya berpindah di antara mereka. “Mereka menyakiti diri sendiri” → “They hurt themselves”: setiap orang hanya menyakiti dirinya sendiri.

Jadi kalau dalam bahasa Indonesia kamu akan memakai “saling” atau “satu sama lain”, pakai each other / one another. Jangan memakai themselves hanya karena subjeknya they.

Contoh bahasa Inggris sehari-hari

"The two companies have worked with each other for over a decade."
"Please introduce yourselves to one another before the meeting starts."
"The kids in the carpool always sit next to each other."
"Long-distance couples make an effort to call one another every day."

Perhatikan

✗There are three of us on the project, so we have to say "one another" instead of "each other."
✓There are three of us on the project, and we help each other (or one another) whenever someone gets stuck.

Aturan “each other = dua orang, one another = tiga orang atau lebih” masih muncul di beberapa buku, tetapi dalam bahasa Inggris modern itu mitos: keduanya bisa saling menggantikan, berapa pun besar kelompoknya.

✗We always read each others' emails before sending a reply.
✓We always read each other's emails before sending a reply.

Other selalu tunggal dalam ungkapan ini, walaupun orangnya banyak. Karena itu apostrofnya tepat sebelum s: each other's, bukan each others'.

✗The committee members respect each others a lot.
✓The committee members respect each other a lot.

Seperti “satu sama lain”, bentuknya selalu sama.

✗The students borrowed each other notes before the exam.
✓The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam.

“Saling meminjam catatan” tidak memakai tanda kepemilikan, tetapi dalam bahasa Inggris catatan itu milik each other, jadi perlu 's.

✗My parents never argue each other.
✓My parents never argue with each other.

“Tidak pernah bertengkar” tidak memerlukan preposisi, tetapi argue dalam bahasa Inggris memerlukan with: argue with each other. Begitu juga talk to, listen to, wait for.

✗The two sisters help mutually.
✓The two sisters help each other.

“Saling membantu” tidak diterjemahkan dengan mutually. Dalam bahasa Inggris, each other setelah kata kerja sudah menyatakan makna timbal balik.

✗They married with each other last year.
✓They got married last year.

“Mereka menikah tahun lalu” cukup they got married; makna timbal baliknya sudah ada dalam kata kerja. Untuk menyebut pasangannya, marry juga tidak memakai with: She married him.

✗The roommates always blame themselves when the kitchen is a mess.
✓The roommates always blame each other when the kitchen is a mess.

“Saling menyalahkan” adalah each other. Themselves berarti “menyalahkan diri sendiri”, yaitu setiap orang menyalahkan dirinya sendiri.

Perbandingan dengan bahasamu

Bahasa Indonesia membedakan “saling” atau “satu sama lain” (timbal balik) dari “diri sendiri” (refleksif): “Mereka saling menyalahkan” dan “Mereka menyalahkan diri sendiri”

Bahasa Inggris membuat perbedaan yang sama: “saling” → each other / one another, “diri sendiri” → themselves, ourselves, yourselves. “They blame each other” dan “They blame themselves” artinya sangat berbeda, sama seperti dalam bahasa Indonesia.

“Saling” diletakkan di depan kata kerja: “saling membantu”, “saling mendukung”, “saling mengenal”

Dalam bahasa Inggris, each other diletakkan setelah kata kerja: “help each other”, “support each other”, “know each other”. Jangan menerjemahkan “saling” menjadi mutually: “They help mutually” salah. Kata sifat mutual memang ada (“mutual respect” = rasa saling menghormati), tetapi tidak menggantikan each other setelah kata kerja.

Dalam bahasa Indonesia, kata kerja timbal balik sering dipakai tanpa preposisi: “saling bicara”, “saling menunggu”, “tidak pernah bertengkar”

Dalam bahasa Inggris, kata kerja tetap membawa preposisinya sendiri sebelum each other: “talk to each other”, “wait for each other”, “argue with each other”, “listen to one another”. “They never argue each other” salah. Sebaliknya, kata kerja yang tidak memakai preposisi juga tidak boleh diberi preposisi: “support each other”, bukan “support with each other”.

We're meeting at eight”, “They got married”, “They hugged”, “They kissed”. Dengan hug atau kiss, each other boleh ditambahkan (“They hugged each other”), tetapi tidak wajib. She married him”, bukan “They married with each other”.

“Satu sama lain” tidak berubah, entah untuk dua orang atau sepuluh orang

Begitu juga each other dan one another: tidak pernah berubah. Dua saudara perempuan, dua teman, atau sekelompok sepuluh orang: selalu each other (atau one another). Tidak pernah “each others” atau “ones another”.

💡 “Saling” atau “satu sama lain” → each other / one another; “diri sendiri” → themselves/ourselves/yourselves.

💡 “Saling” bukan mutually, dan each other diletakkan setelah kata kerja: saling membantu → help each other.

💡 Preposisi tetap ada: talk to each other, argue with each other. Dan each other tidak pernah berubah, jadi tidak ada each others.

Situasi nyata: patungan membeli hadiah

"Should we all chip in for Maria's going-away gift?"

"Good idea. Let's text each other how much everyone can give."

"I'll message the group. We can also ask one another for gift ideas — she'd love something practical."

"Perfect. Let's check in with each other by Friday so we can order it in time."
