Adverbios relativos where, when, why

B1 · IntermedioOraciones de relativo

The city where I was born. The day when we met. The reason why she left.

Where, when y why son relative adverbs (adverbios relativos).

"The city where I was born has changed a lot."
"The city in which I was born has changed a lot."

Where: para lugares

Sustituye a “in which”, “at which” u “on which”, y la preposición desaparece por completo, igual que con “donde” en español: “the park where we used to play”, no “…where we used to play in”.

"This is the restaurant where we had our first date."
"This is the office where I work."

When: para momentos

Sustituye a “in which”, “on which” o “at which”.

En inglés, “the day when we met” es lo normal, y también puedes omitir when: “the day we met”. Lo que no conviene es copiar “en que” como “in which” o “in that”.

"I remember the day when we met."
"2020 was the year when everything changed."

Why: para razones

Usa “why” después de “the reason”. Sustituye a “for which” y suena mucho más natural. No traduzcas “por la que” como “because” ni “of”: “the reason because she left” y “the reason of she left” son incorrectos.

También son muy comunes “the reason that …” o directamente sin palabra de enlace: “the reason she left”.

"That's the reason why she left early."
"Do you know the reason why the flight was delayed?"

Ejemplos del inglés real

"This is the park where we used to play."
"Summer is the season when I feel most productive."
"Nobody knows the reason why he quit."
"That's the house where I grew up."

Atención

✗This is the office when I work.
✓This is the office where I work.

Para lugares usa where, no when: when es solo para tiempo.

✗2020 was the year where everything changed.
✓2020 was the year when everything changed.

✗This is the town why she was born.
✓This is the town where she was born.

Para lugares usa where: why solo va después de “the reason”.

✗That's the reason because she left early.
✓That's the reason why she left early.

Después de the reason usa why, that o nada: the reason (why) she left.

✗This is the park where we used to play in.
✓This is the park where we used to play.

Where ya incluye la preposición (= in which), como “donde” en español. No mezcles las dos estructuras: “the park where we used to play” o, más formal, “the park in which we used to play”.

Después de un sustantivo de tiempo necesitas when: "2020 was the year when everything changed.", no "the year where".

La traducción literal "the city in which I was born" es correcta, pero suena rígida en el día a día. Más natural: "The city where I was born has changed a lot." Y con días la preposición sería on, no in: "the day in which we first met" no suena natural. Di simplemente "the day when we first met" o "the day we first met".

That's the reason why she left early." Evita "the reason because" y "the reason of": después de reason va why, that o nada.

💡 Lugar → where; tiempo → when; razón (después de the reason) → why.

💡 “El año donde…” en inglés es the year when…, nunca the year where.

💡 “La razón por la que…” = the reason why…, nunca the reason because.

💡 Después de where no pongas otra preposición: the house where I grew up.

Situación real: recuerdos

"Do you remember the café where we used to study?"

"Of course — that was the year when we were both broke!"

"Ha, true. That's probably the reason why we studied there so much — it was cheap."
