Pronombres recíprocos: each other y one another

A2 · ElementalPronombres

  • Qué significan each other y one another y cómo expresan una acción mutua
  • Por qué each other y one another son intercambiables en el inglés actual, sin importar cuántas personas participen
  • Cómo se forma el posesivo: each other's y one another's
  • Cuándo el “se” o el “nos” del español es each other y cuándo themselves u ourselves

La idea básica

Each other y one another son pronombres recíprocos.

Each other y one another

Each other y one another expresan la misma idea recíproca y funcionan igual en la oración: "The neighbors greet each other every morning." "The neighbors greet one another every morning." Las dos oraciones significan exactamente lo mismo.

Pueden ir justo después del verbo (know each other) o después de una preposición (talk to one another, work with each other, care about one another).

"The neighbors greet each other every morning."
"The neighbors greet one another every morning."

En el inglés real y actual, each other y one another se usan indistintamente, sea cual sea el número de personas: "The two roommates split the bills with each other" y "The five roommates split the bills with each other" son igual de naturales, y one another funcionaría igual de bien en las dos.

La forma posesiva: each other's / one another's

El posesivo se forma con apóstrofo + s: each other's, one another's. "The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam." "The teams respect one another's effort."

"The students borrowed each other's notes before the exam."
"The teams respect one another's effort."

Entonces es each other / one another.

"The two companies have worked with each other for over a decade."
"Please introduce yourselves to one another before the meeting starts."
"The kids in the carpool always sit next to each other."
"Long-distance couples make an effort to call one another every day."

Atención

✗There are three of us on the project, so we have to say "one another" instead of "each other."
✓There are three of us on the project, and we help each other (or one another) whenever someone gets stuck.

✗We always read each others' emails before sending a reply.
✓We always read each other's emails before sending a reply.

✗The committee members respect each others a lot.
✓The committee members respect each other a lot.

✗The roommates always blame themselves when the kitchen is a mess.
✓The roommates always blame each other when the kitchen is a mess.

✗We know ourselves from school.
✓We know each other from school.

✗The two sisters help mutually.
✓The two sisters help each other.

Si la acción va y viene, usa each other: "They know each other", "They love each other a lot".

En inglés each other hace todo ese trabajo solo: “Se ayudan mutuamente” → "They help each other", “Hablan entre ellos” → "They talk to each other", “Se miraron el uno al otro” → "They looked at each other". "They help mutually", "They talk between them" o "one to the other" suenan mal.

Algunos verbos ingleses ya son recíprocos por sí mismos: "We're meeting at eight", "They got married", "They fell in love", "They kissed", "They hugged". Con kiss o hug se puede añadir each other ("They hugged each other"), pero no hace falta. Un reflexivo palabra por palabra ("We see us", "They married themselves") no existe en inglés.

Aquí el inglés te lo pone fácil: each other y one another nunca cambian. Dos hermanas, dos amigos o un grupo de diez personas: siempre each other (u one another). Nunca "each others" ni "ones another".

→ each other. ¿Encaja “a sí mismo”? → themselves/ourselves/yourselves.

💡 “Mutuamente”, “entre sí”, “el uno al otro” → simplemente each other.

💡 Each other no cambia nunca: ni género, ni plural, ni each others.

Situación real: organizar un regalo en grupo

"Should we all chip in for Maria's going-away gift?"

"Good idea. Let's text each other how much everyone can give."

"I'll message the group. We can also ask one another for gift ideas — she'd love something practical."

"Perfect. Let's check in with each other by Friday so we can order it in time."
