Las partículas y su significado

B1 · IntermedioPhrasal verbs

Eat up, find out, carry on: la misma partícula suele aportar un significado parecido en muchos phrasal verbs distintos.

  • out suele significar “averiguar” o “resolver”: find out, figure out, work out, sort out
  • out también puede significar “desaparecer” o “acabarse”: die out, burn out, run out
  • on suele significar “seguir”: carry on, go on, keep on; nunca lo traduzcas como follow

"up = finalización: eat up, use up, clean up, finish up"
"out = descubrir: find out, figure out, work out"

up: hacer algo por completo

Donde en español pondrías ese “se” de “todo”, en inglés suele ir up: "Eat up your vegetables", "We used up all the paint". No uses out para esto: eat out significa “comer fuera de casa”.

"Eat up your vegetables. (cómetelas todas)"
"We used up all the paint. (no queda nada)"
"Clean up your room. (ordénalo bien)"

out: averiguar, resolver o desaparecer

Out tiene dos significados muy frecuentes: averiguar o resolver algo (find out, figure out, sort out, work out), o desaparecer, terminarse, agotarse (die out, burn out, run out).

En español son verbos distintos: find out = averiguar, enterarse; figure out / work out = descifrar, entender, resolver; die out = extinguirse, desaparecer; run out = acabarse. Con run out hay dos estructuras: The coffee has run out. We've run out of coffee.

"I need to find out what happened."
"The old custom eventually died out."
"We've run out of coffee."

on: seguir

En español dices “seguir” o “continuar”: carry on = seguir, continuar; go on = seguir, continuar (o seguir adelante); keep on trying = seguir intentándolo. Pero para “seguir haciendo algo” no uses follow: Please carry on with your work, no “follow with your work”.

"Please carry on with your work."
"Despite the rain, the match went on."
"Keep on trying — you're close."

Ejemplos del inglés real

"Finish up your coffee — we need to leave soon."
"It took hours, but they finally figured out the puzzle."
"The old factory eventually burned out and closed down."
"Even after the setback, she carried on with the project."

Atención

✗Eat out your vegetables before dessert.
✓Eat up your vegetables before dessert.

✗Please follow with what you were saying.
✓Please carry on with what you were saying.

Para continuar algo se usa carry on o go on.

✗I need to find in what happened.
✓I need to find out what happened.

Find out = averiguar, enterarse.

✗We've run out coffee.
✓We've run out of coffee.

Ese “se” dice que la acción se hace por completo, y es justo lo que hace up en muchos phrasal verbs: "Eat up your vegetables", "Drink up your water before we leave", "We used up all the paint".

Find out no es “encontrar afuera”, sino “averiguar”; die out no es “morir fuera”, sino “extinguirse”.

Para continuar una acción se usa carry on, go on o keep on: "Please carry on with your work", "Keep on trying". "Please follow with your work" no tiene sentido en inglés.

💡 Si en español dirías “comérselo/bebérselo todo”, piensa en up: eat up, drink up.

💡 out = averiguar (find out) o acabarse (run out, die out); on = seguir (carry on).

💡 “Seguir con algo” es carry on o go on, nunca follow.

Situación real: resolver un misterio

"Did you ever find out who sent that anonymous message?"

"Not yet — I'm still trying to figure it out."

"Let me know if you sort it out. It's such a strange situation."

"I will — I'm not giving up until I work out what's really going on."
