Other, Another y Others

B1 · IntermedioDeterminantes y cuantificadores

Another, other y others equivalen a “otro/otros”.

Another, other y others señalan algo distinto o adicional.

Pero en inglés, para “otro” + singular necesitas another: another coffee, another cup.

"Can I have another cup of coffee?" — otra taza más, singular.

"This shirt doesn't fit. Do you have another one?" — aquí another significa “otra distinta”; another también puede ir sola y sustituir al sustantivo.

"Can I have another cup of coffee?"
"This shirt doesn't fit. Do you have another one?"

Other + sustantivo en plural / incontable

“Otras preguntas” es other questions, no “others questions”. Si ya hay otro determinante delante (the, my, any, some, no), other también puede ir con un sustantivo en singular: the other day, some other time, any other question.

"Do you have any other questions?" — other delante del plural questions (“¿alguna otra pregunta?”).

"I need some other advice." — other delante del incontable advice.

"Do you have any other questions?"
"I need some other advice."

"Some students like math; others prefer science." — others sustituye a “other students”.

"I've read a few of his books, but not the others."

Regla práctica: si viene un sustantivo detrás, usa other. Si no viene ninguno y hablas de varios, usa others.

"Some students like math; others prefer science."
"I've read a few of his books, but not the others."

The other(s): los que quedan, concretos

"I have two sisters. One lives in Kyiv, and the other lives in Lviv." — si son exactamente dos, la segunda es “la otra”: the other, no another.

"There are five apples. I'll eat one now and save the others for later."

"I have two sisters. One lives in Kyiv, and the other lives in Lviv."
"There are five apples. I'll eat one now and save the others for later."

Ejemplos del inglés real

"Would you like another cup of tea?"
"Some people work better in the morning; others focus better at night."
"I only found one of my keys — where's the other one?"
"Are there any other flights available today?"

Atención

✗Can I have other cup of coffee?
✓Can I have another cup of coffee?

En español “otra” no lleva artículo, pero en inglés un contable en singular necesita another (an + other).

✗I need an other pen.
✓I need another pen.

Another siempre se escribe en una sola palabra, nunca an other.

✗I need another pens.
✓I need other pens.

“Otros bolígrafos” no es another pens: another va con singular, y delante de un plural normal se usa other. (Con número sí: “another two pens” = otros dos bolígrafos.)

✗Do you have any others questions?
✓Do you have any other questions?

✗I have two dogs. One is black, another is white.
✓I have two dogs. One is black, the other is white.

En inglés, other solo, delante de un sustantivo contable en singular, no funciona: "Can I have other coffee?" es incorrecto. El “un” está dentro de another: "Can I have another coffee?" Y siempre en una sola palabra, nunca "an other".

La -s solo aparece cuando others va sola: "Some people like tea; others like coffee."

Another funciona exactamente igual: "Can I have another cup of coffee?" (una más) y "Do you have another one?"

Y “otras dos semanas” es "another two weeks".

💡 Sustantivo en singular → another; sustantivo en plural o incontable → other; sin sustantivo y en plural → others.

💡 “Otro café” es another coffee: en inglés el artículo va dentro de another.

💡 Pon the delante cuando hablas de los que quedan, concretos y conocidos (como “el otro”, “los demás”): the other(s).

Situación real: probándote ropa

"This one's too small. Do you have it in another size?"

"Let me check. We also have a few other colors, if you're interested."

"Sure, show me the others."

"Here you go — this is the last one, and here's the other option we have."
