B1 · IntermedioEstilo indirecto

"I'll call you tomorrow," he said (on Monday). → He said he would call me the next day.

  • today→that day, tomorrow→the next day, yesterday→the day before, now→then
  • here→there, this→that, these→those: ese y aquel del español son that en inglés

"Monday: "I'll call you tomorrow," he said."
"Reported on Wednesday: He said he would call me the next day."

Cambios en las palabras de tiempo

today → that day; tomorrow → the next day / the following day; yesterday → the day before / the previous day; now → then; next week → the following week; last week → the week before / the previous week; ago → before.

Las equivalencias con el español son casi exactas: “al día siguiente” = the next day, “el día anterior” = the day before, “la semana siguiente” = the following week, “dos días antes” = two days before.

""I saw her two days ago." → He said he had seen her two days before."

She said she liked that room”.

""I like this room," she said (in that room). → She said she liked that room."

Cuándo no cambian

"Spoken and reported the same day: "I'm busy today," she said. → She said she was busy today."

Ejemplos del inglés real

"He said he would see me the following month."
"She said she had moved there the year before."
"He said those were his keys."
"She said she would call the next day."

Atención

✗He said he would call me tomorrow. (reported a week later)
✓He said he would call me the next day.

Usa the next day (“al día siguiente”).

✗He said he would call me at the next day.
✓He said he would call me the next day.

“Al día siguiente” lleva “a” en español, pero the next day va sin preposición en inglés.

✗She said she liked this room. (reported somewhere else)
✓She said she liked that room.

This y here señalan el lugar original. Si lo cuentas desde otro sitio, usa that y there.

✗She said she had arrived the last week.
✓She said she had arrived the week before.

“La semana pasada” no se traduce con the: “the last week” significa “los últimos siete días”. En el estilo indirecto, the week before.

✗He said he had seen her two days ago.
✓He said he had seen her two days before.

No tienes que aprender la idea, solo las palabras inglesas: the next day, there, two days before. Los problemas aparecen cuando traduces el español palabra por palabra: “at the next day” en lugar de “the next day”, o “two days ago” en lugar de “two days before”.

En inglés, last week y last year van sin artículo y cuentan desde hoy. “The last week” significa “los últimos siete días”. Para contar lo que alguien dijo, usa the week before o the previous week: “She said she had arrived the week before.”

💡 “Al día siguiente” = the next day, sin at. “Dos días antes” = two days before.

💡 Ese y aquel son that; esos y aquellos, those.

"Did Mia ever call back?"

"Yeah, last week. She said she'd be here the next day, but something came up."

"Did she say when she'd come instead?"

"She just said she'd let us know later that week."
