Předložky: americká a britská angličtina

B1 · Středně pokročilýAmerická a britská angličtina

At the weekend, nebo on the weekend: stejný význam, jiná předložka. Čeština často připomíná jednu z variant – toho můžete využít.

Co se naučíte

  • Britsky „at the weekend“, americky „on the weekend“; nikdy „in the weekend“ ani „at weekend“ bez členu, i když české „o víkendu“ nebo „v sobotu“ k tomu svádí
  • Britsky „fill in a form“, americky „fill out a form“; „vyplnit formulář“ není „fill a form“ ani „fill up a form“
  • Britsky „Monday to Friday“, americky „Monday through Friday“; u otevírací doby neříkejte „Monday until Friday“
  • Britsky „in a team“, americky „on a team“
  • Čas: britsky s past (five past ten), americky často s after (five after ten), i když past je tam také běžné
  • „Different from“ je standard v obou variantách; americká angličtina používá i „different than“, britská „different to“

Čeština vás často vede k britské variantě: „od pondělí do pátku“ → Monday to Friday, „hrát v týmu“ → play in the team. Ve škole se stejně obvykle učíte britskou verzi. Nejdůležitější je držet se v jednom textu jedné varianty.

"British: at the weekend / American: on the weekend"
"British: fill in a form / American: fill out a form"

Čas a otevírací doba

Víkend a rozsahy dnů jsou dva klasické příklady. Britsky: at the weekend a Monday to Friday; americky: on the weekend a Monday through Friday (through jasně ukazuje, že pátek se počítá). V žádné variantě se neříká „in the weekend“, i když Češi k in snadno sáhnou podle in the morning nebo in summer. Pozor i na chybějící člen: „at weekend“ je špatně. Pokud nechcete volit, this weekend, next weekend nebo every weekend fungují všude, bez předložky. A „jedeme pryč na víkend“ (na celý víkend) je we're going away for the weekend – for říká, na jak dlouho.

Until označuje hlavně časovou hranici: „The shop is open until six“, „I'm away until Friday“.

"British: I'll see you at the weekend."
"American: I'll see you on the weekend."
"British: The store is open Monday to Saturday."
"American: The store is open Monday through Saturday."

Sloveso + předložka a týmy

„Fill in“, nebo „fill out“ formulář je jeden z nejčastějších každodenních rozdílů. Částice je povinná: české „vyplnit formulář“ předložku nemá, ale anglicky fill a form zní špatně. A fill up znamená „naplnit“ (sklenici, nádrž: fill up the tank) – k formuláři se nehodí. V případě pochybností funguje v obou variantách complete a form.

Příslušnost ke skupině, například k týmu nebo komisi, má na obou stranách Atlantiku také jinou předložku: britsky in the team (jako „v týmu“), americky on the team. Podobně se studiem: britsky at university, americky in college – bez členu, když říkáte, že je někdo student. Nepřekládejte „na univerzitě“ ani „na vysoké“ jako on university. Pozor: v americké angličtině je college prostě vysoká škola, ne střední škola (ta je high school).

"British: Fill in your details here. / American: Fill out your details here."
"British: She plays in the national team. / American: She plays on the national team."
"She's at university."

Angličtina v praxi

"British: Could you fill in this form and hand it back to me at the weekend?"
"American: Could you fill out this form and hand it back to me on the weekend?"
"British: The gym is open Monday to Friday, and she plays in the staff football team."
"American: The gym is open Monday through Friday, and she plays on the staff soccer team."

Pozor

✗'On the weekend' is incorrect — it should always be 'at the weekend.'
✓Both are correct: 'at the weekend' is British, 'on the weekend' is American.

✗Please fill in out this form.
✓Please fill in this form. (British) OR Please fill out this form. (American)

Dvě částice najednou nejsou kompromis: zvolte celou dvojici z jedné varianty.

✗What are you doing in the weekend?
✓What are you doing at the weekend?

České „o víkendu“ nemá jasný anglický protějšek a in svádí analogie s in the morning nebo in summer. Použijte at the weekend (britsky), on the weekend (americky), nebo prostě this weekend.

✗I'll call you at weekend.
✓I'll call you at the weekend.

Čeština člen nemá, a proto se snadno vynechá. Jednotlivý víkend je at the weekend / on the weekend; bez členu jen v množném čísle: at weekends.

✗It's half eleven. (meaning 10:30)
✓It's half past ten.

✗Please fill this form.
✓Please fill in this form.

„Vyplnit formulář“ česky předložku nemá, ale anglicky potřebujete in (britsky), nebo out (americky).

✗Please fill up this form.
✓Please fill out this form.

Fill up znamená „naplnit“ (nádrž, sklenici). Formulář je fill in, nebo fill out.

✗My sister is on university.
✓My sister is at university.

Kalk z „je na vysoké / na univerzitě“. Britsky at university, americky in college.

Srovnání s češtinou

„O víkendu odpočívám“, „v sobotu a v neděli pracuji“: česky víkend pojíme s „o“ a dny s „v“

Anglicky potřebuje víkend předložku a člen, ale ne in: britsky „at the weekend“, americky „on the weekend“. Ve významu „každý víkend“ britsky „at weekends“, americky „on weekends“. Bez předložky jen s this, next, last, every: „this weekend“, „next weekend“.

„Pět minut po desáté“, ale „čtvrt na jedenáct“ (10:15), „půl jedenácté“ (10:30), „tři čtvrtě na jedenáct“ (10:45)

První vzorec sedí: „five past ten“ (americky i „five after ten“). Ostatní čeština počítá k příští hodině, angličtina od té celé: „a quarter past ten“, „half past ten“, „a quarter to eleven“. Britské hovorové „half ten“ je také 10:30. Bezpečné v obou variantách je přečíst číslice: „ten thirty“, „ten oh five“.

„Od pondělí do pátku“, „hrát v týmu“

Tady čeština připomíná britskou angličtinu: „Monday to Friday“, „in the team“. Americká dává přednost „Monday through Friday“ a „on the team“. Využijte to k zapamatování, ale v jednom textu varianty nemíchejte.

„Je to jiné, než jsem čekal“, „odlišný od“

Bezpečný tvar v obou variantách je „different from“: „different from what I expected“. České „jiný než“ napovídá „different than“ – to je americky správné a běžné, ale u zkoušky z britské angličtiny raději volte from. Britové říkají i „different to“.

💡 „O víkendu“ → at the weekend (britsky), nebo on the weekend (americky), nikdy in the weekend.

💡 „Půl jedenácté“ → half past ten (10:30); britské „half ten“ je také 10:30.

💡 „Od pondělí do pátku“ → Monday to Friday (britsky), nebo Monday through Friday (americky); until označuje hranici (until six).

💡 „Na vysoké“ → at university (britsky), nebo in college (americky).

Ze života: formuláře v zahraničí

"The receptionist asked me to fill out this form, but I kept writing 'fill in' out of habit."

"Ha, that happens — it's the same form either way, just a different verb depending on where you are."

"Good to know. Anything else I should watch for while I'm here?"

"Just listen for 'on the weekend' instead of 'at the weekend' — that one trips people up too."
