Çıkarım bildiren modal fiiller

B2 · Orta üstüModal fiiller

Must ve can't ile gördüklerinden kesin bir sonuç çıkarırsın: “öyle olmalı” ya da “olamaz”. İyi haber: Türkçedeki “olmalı” ve “olamaz” sana yol gösterir.

Neler öğreneceksin

  • Olumlu, mantıklı bir sonuç için must + fiilin yalın hâli (“evde olmalı”, “yorgunsundur”)
  • Olumsuz, mantıklı bir sonuç için can't + fiilin yalın hâli (“olamaz”)
  • Geçmişle ilgili sonuçlar için must have / can't have + past participle (“unutmuş olmalı”, “gitmiş olamazlar”)
  • “Olmalı”nın olumsuzu neden mustn't değil, can't olur; “unutmuştur” gibi cümleler nasıl çevrilir

İpucundan sonuca

Must ve can't rastgele bir tahmin değil, ipuçlarına dayanan mantıklı bir sonuç bildirir: bir şeyin doğru olduğundan ya da doğru olamayacağından neredeyse eminsin. “The lights are off, so they must be asleep.” “He can't be at work — I just saw his car at home.”

Daha az eminsen might, may ya da could kullan: “They might be asleep.” yalnızca “Uyuyor olabilirler” demektir. Must ve can't neredeyse %100 eminlik bildirir; might/may/could ise gerçek bir olasılık.

"The lights are off, so they must be asleep."
"He can't be at work — I just saw his car at home."

Must (olumlu) ve can't (olumsuz)

Must kesin, olumlu bir sonuç çıkarır: doğru olmalı. Can't kesin, olumsuz bir sonuç çıkarır: doğru olamaz. “This must be the wrong address.” = “Burası yanlış adres olmalı.” “That can't be right.”

Sorun simetriden çıkar: “olmalı → must be” ise “olmamalı → mustn't be” olacakmış gibi gelir. Ama mustn't İngilizcede bir yasak bildirir: “You mustn't park here.” (“Buraya park etmemelisin, yasak.”) “He mustn't be at work” cümlesi kulağa “İşte bulunması yasak” gibi gelir.

Amerikan İngilizcesinde olumsuz ve biraz daha yumuşak bir sonuç için must not da duyulur (genellikle kısaltılmadan): “He must not be home — nobody's answering.” Ama “imkânsız” demek istiyorsan güvenli seçim can't'tir; kısaltılmış mustn't çıkarım için pek kullanılmaz.

Must ve can't'ten sonra her zaman fiilin yalın hâli gelir, to ya da -ing olmadan: must be; must to be ya da must being değil. Türkçede “olmak” fiili çoğu zaman görünmez (“Yorgunsundur”), ama İngilizcede be düşmez: “You must be tired”, “You must tired” değil.

"This must be the wrong address."
"That can't be right."

Geçmişle ilgili sonuçlar

Geçmişteki bir şey hakkında kesin bir sonuç için must have ya da can't have + past participle kullan: “She must have forgotten her keys.” “They can't have left yet — their car is still here.”

Bu yapı Türkçeye çok benzer: “Anahtarlarını unutmuş olmalı” → must have forgotten, “Henüz gitmiş olamazlar” → can't have left. “-miş olmalı” ve “-miş olamaz” kalıplarını düşünürsen doğru yapıyı bulursun. Türkçede daha sık “Anahtarlarını unutmuştur” dersin; bunu “She forgot her keys” diye çevirirsen tahmin anlamı kaybolur, “She must forgot” ise yanlıştır. Her zaman must/can't + have + past participle.

“Kolay olmuş olamaz” anlamındaki “Hiç kolay olmamıştır” cümlesi de buraya uyar: “That can't have been easy.” (Aynı anlamda “That couldn't have been easy” de denir.)

"She must have forgotten her keys."
"They can't have left yet — their car is still here."

Gerçek hayattan İngilizce örnekler

"You must be joking."
"He must have missed the train."
"That can't have been easy."
"They can't have forgotten — I just reminded them."

Dikkat

✗He mustn't be at work — I just saw his car at home.
✓He can't be at work — I just saw his car at home.

✗That mustn't have been easy.
✓That can't have been easy.

“Kolay olmamıştır” ya da “kolay olmuş olamaz” cümlesi mustn't ile çevrilmez. Geçmişle ilgili olumsuz bir sonuç için can't have + past participle kullan.

✗She must forgot her keys.
✓She must have forgotten her keys.

“Unutmuş olmalı” cümlesindeki “olmuş” kısmı İngilizcede have + past participle olarak kalır: must have forgotten.

✗This must to be the wrong address.
✓This must be the wrong address.

Must'tan sonra to gelmez; fiil doğrudan yalın hâlde gelir: must be.

✗You must tired after that flight.
✓You must be tired after that flight.

Türkçede “Yorgunsundur” cümlesinde ayrı bir “olmak” fiili görünmez, ama İngilizcede sıfattan önce be gerekir: must be tired.

“He must be at home.” / “He can't be at home.” Sezgine güven: “olamaz” diyeceğin yerde can't kullan, geçmişte de: “Bunu bilmiş olamaz” = “He can't have known that.”

“Olmalı”nın olumsuzu “olmamalı”dır ve Türkçede bu biçim daha çok “olmaması gerekir” anlamına gelir

İngilizcede mustn't de bir yasak ya da kural bildirir, çıkarım değil: “You mustn't park here.” Kesin, olumsuz bir sonuç için can't kullan: “That can't have been easy.” “Olmayabilir” demek istiyorsan might not: “He might not be at home.”

“Yorgunsundur” → “You must be tired” (be'yi unutma). “Trafiğe takılmıştır” → “He must be stuck in traffic” ya da “He's probably stuck in traffic”. Geçmiş için must have: “Treni kaçırmıştır” → “He must have missed the train.” Ekini atıp “He missed the train” dersen, tahmin değil kesin bir bilgi vermiş olursun.

💡 Türkçede “olamaz” diyeceğin yerde İngilizcede can't kullan; mustn't asla.

💡 “Olmamalı” mustn't değildir: mustn't “yasak” demektir.

💡 Geçmiş: must have / can't have + past participle, tıpkı “unutmuş olmalı”, “gitmiş olamaz” gibi.

💡 “Yorgunsundur” → You must be tired: tahmin için must, sıfattan önce be.

Gerçek hayatta: burada ne olmuş?

"The door's unlocked but no one's answering."

"They must have just stepped out for a minute."

"Maybe. Their bags are still here, though."

"True — they can't have gone far, then."
