Some stuff. Or something. Around thirty, give or take.

  • 모호한 명사는 굳이 정확히 말할 필요가 없거나 말하고 싶지 않은 단어를 대신해요: stuff, thing, thingy, what's-his-name / what's-her-name
  • 목록을 열어 두는 표현은 비슷한 것이 더 있다는 걸 알려 줘요: and stuff like that, and so on, or something
  • 숫자와 시각을 흐리는 표현: around, about, or so, -ish, give or take

특히 “한 스무 명”의 “한”은 “like twenty people”의 like와 거의 같은 역할을 해요.

"I need to buy some stuff for the trip."
"There were like twenty people there, or so."

“물건들”처럼 한국어에서 “-들”을 붙이고 싶어도 “some stuff”, “a lot of stuff”라고 하고, “stuffs”나 “a stuff”라고 하지 않아요.

"He's got a new gadget, a thingy for charging his phone wirelessly."
"What's-his-name called earlier — you know, the guy from accounting."

and stuff like that, and so on(“뭐 그런 거”, “등등”)은 목록이 더 이어질 수 있지만 굳이 말하지 않겠다는 신호예요. 학교에서 배운 “etc.”나 “and so on”도 틀리진 않지만, 친구와 이야기할 때는 “and stuff like that”, “and stuff”가 훨씬 자연스러워요. 숫자와 시각을 흐릴 때는 around, about, or so, -ish, give or take(“~쯤”, “~정도”, “약”, “한”)를 써요. “7시쯤”은 “7-ish”나 “around 7”, “스무 명 남짓”은 “twenty or so”나 “twenty-odd”예요.

숫자와 시간 뒤에는 or so(“fifteen or so”, “an hour or so”), 물건이나 활동 뒤에는 or something(“pizza or something”, “go for a walk or something”)이에요. “pizza or so”는 자연스러운 영어가 아니에요.

"We need pens, paper, and stuff like that."
"It's around 30 dollars, give or take."
"I'll be there at 7-ish."

✗The delivery will arrive sometime soon-ish, give or take, with some stuff included. (in a formal shipping contract)
✓The delivery will arrive on March 15th, containing the items listed in Appendix A.

✗Assuming a speaker who says 'stuff' or 'or something' doesn't know precise English.
✓Vague language is a deliberate, normal choice in casual conversation, not a sign of limited vocabulary.

✗We could get pizza or so.
✓We could get pizza or something.

“피자 정도”, “피자나 뭐”처럼 물건이나 활동 뒤에 오는 말은 or something이에요. or so는 fifteen or so, an hour or so처럼 숫자와 시간 뒤에만 써요.

✗I need to buy some stuffs for the trip.
✓I need to buy some stuff for the trip.

Bring snacks, drinks, etc.
✓Bring snacks, drinks, and stuff like that.

회화에서는 and stuff like that이 더 자연스러워요.

한국어의 “정도”, “쯤”, “~(이)나 뭐”는 영어에서 or so와 or something으로 나뉘어요

한국어의 모호한 표현은 대부분 영어로 잘 이어져요: “이것저것”, “물건” → stuff, “그거”, “그 뭐더라” → thingy, “뭐 그런 거” → and stuff (like that), “~쯤”, “약” → around / about, “앞뒤로 조금씩” → give or take, “걔 이름이 뭐더라” → what's-his-name, 숫자 앞의 “한” → like. 숫자, 양, 시각 뒤에는 “or so”(“10분 정도” → “ten minutes or so”), 물건, 장소, 활동 뒤에는 “or something”(“피자나 먹자” → “Let's get pizza or something”)이에요.

“some stuff”, “a lot of stuff”라고 해요. 셀 수 있는 복수형이 필요하다면 things를 써요: “I need to buy a few things for the trip.”

와 and so on은 영어 회화에서 딱딱하게 들릴 수 있어요

“and so on”과 “etc.” 친구와 편하게 이야기할 때는 “and stuff like that”, “and stuff”, “and things like that”이 자연스러워요: “We need pens, paper, and stuff like that.”

💡 “정도”, “쯤” → 숫자와 시간 뒤에는 or so, 물건과 활동 뒤에는 or something.

💡 “이것저것”, “물건들” → some stuff(-s 없이) 또는 a few things.

💡 “7시쯤” → at 7-ish 또는 around 7.

"What do we need to bring?"

"Just snacks, drinks, and stuff like that — nothing fancy."

"How many people are coming, roughly?"

"Maybe fifteen or so, give or take a few."
