most는 “대부분의”, several은 “몇몇의”, plenty of는 “넉넉한”, a number of는 “여러”라는 뜻이에요.

  • most + 명사(the도 of도 없이)는 일반적인 이야기, most of + the/my/us/them은 특정한 그룹이에요.
  • a number of + 복수 명사 + 복수 동사(“여러”), the number of + 단수 동사(“~의 수”)예요.

영어에는 some, any, much, many 말고도 양을 더 정확하게 말해 주는 한정사가 있어요. most, several, plenty of, a number of가 대표적이에요.

most와 most of

“the most people”도 아니에요. (the most는 최상급이에요: “Who has the most money?”

즉 the, this/these, my/your 같은 말이나 us, them 같은 대명사 앞이에요. “우리 반 학생들 대부분”은 most of the students in my class예요.

“almost people”이 아니라 most people, 또는 almost all people이라고 해요.

“Most people prefer tea to coffee.”

“Most of the students in my class speak two languages.” –

"Most people prefer tea to coffee."
"Most of the students in my class speak two languages."

(특정한 그룹 앞에서만 several of를 써요: several of my friends, “내 친구들 중 몇 명”.)

“I've invited several friends to the party.” –

“She has read several books on the subject.” –

"I've invited several friends to the party."
"She has read several books on the subject."

plenty of: 넉넉한

“plenty time”이 아니라 plenty of time이에요.

“There's plenty of time before the movie starts.”

“We have plenty of chairs for everyone.” – plenty of + 가산명사.

"There's plenty of time before the movie starts."
"We have plenty of chairs for everyone."

a number of와 the number of

한국어 동사는 주어의 수에 따라 형태가 바뀌지 않아서 “has”를 쓰기 쉬운데, a number of employees have가 맞아요.

the number of는 “~의 수”라는 뜻이에요. 한국어 “직원 수가 늘고 있어요”와 그대로 맞아떨어져요: “The number of employees is increasing.”

-s를 붙이지 않고, 동사도 복수형을 써요: people are, a number of people are.

“A number of employees have complained about the new policy.”

“The number of employees is increasing every year.”

"A number of employees have complained about the new policy."
"The number of employees is increasing every year."

"Most of the time, I just cook something simple for dinner."
"We've had several offers on the house already."
"Don't worry, there's plenty of food for everyone."
"The number of applicants has doubled since last year."

✗Most of people like music.
✓Most people like music.

일반적인 이야기에는 of가 없어요. most of는 the, my, these, us, them 등의 앞에서만 써요.

✗Almost people prefer tea to coffee.
✓Most people prefer tea to coffee.

almost는 “거의”라는 부사라서 명사를 직접 꾸미지 못해요. most people 또는 almost all people이라고 해요.

✗The most people prefer tea to coffee.
✓Most people prefer tea to coffee.

일반적인 이야기의 most에는 the가 붙지 않아요. the most는 “가장 많이”라는 최상급이에요.

✗Most the students in my class passed.
✓Most of the students in my class passed.

the, this/these, my 같은 말이나 대명사(us, them) 앞에서는 most 뒤에 of가 꼭 필요해요.

✗I've invited several friend to the party.
✓I've invited several friends to the party.

✗We have plenty time.
✓We have plenty of time.

명사 앞의 plenty에는 항상 of가 필요해요: plenty of time, plenty of chairs.

✗A number of people is unhappy.
✓A number of people are unhappy.

a number of는 “여러 사람”이라는 뜻이고, people은 복수예요.

✗The number of applicants are growing.
✓The number of applicants is growing.

the number of는 “지원자의 수”라는 숫자 하나라서 단수 동사 is를 써요.

“의”를 of로 옮기면 “most of people”이 되는데, 이건 틀려요. 일반적인 이야기에서는 most를 명사 바로 앞에 써요: “Most people prefer tea to coffee.”, “Most children like sweets.” “the most people”도 안 돼요. the most는 최상급이에요: “She earns the most.”

“almost people”, “almost students”는 틀린 표현이에요. most people이나 almost all people이라고 해요. almost는 almost all, almost everyone, almost every day처럼 써요.

이럴 때는 영어도 of가 필요해요. the, this/these, my/your나 us/them 앞에서는 most of를 써요: “Most of the students in my class…”, “most of us”. of가 빠진 “most the students”는 틀려요.

영어는 둘 다 꼭 표시해요. several, a number of 뒤에는 복수 명사가 와요: several friends, a number of employees. a number of 뒤의 동사도 복수형이에요: “A number of employees have complained.” 반대로 the number of는 숫자 하나라서 단수예요: “The number of employees is increasing.” 요령: a는 복수, the는 단수. people은 늘 복수라서 people are예요.

plenty of도 수와 양 모두에 쓰지만, 뜻은 “넉넉한, 필요한 것보다 많은”이에요: “plenty of time”(시간이 넉넉해요), “plenty of chairs”(의자가 충분해요).

💡 일반적인 “대부분의 사람들” = most people. the도 of도 붙이지 않아요.

💡 뒤에 the, this/these, my나 us/them이 오면 most of예요.

💡 a number of = “여러” → 복수 동사. the number of = “~의 수” → 단수 동사.

"Most of my friends said yes, so probably around twenty."

"Okay, I already bought plenty of drinks, so we should be fine there."

"Good — I invited several people from work too, just in case."
