El subjuntivo en inglés (Subjunctive)

C2 · DominioGramática avanzada

I suggest that he leave now. It's essential that everyone be on time.

  • Algunas fórmulas fijas van aparte: God save the King/Queen, So be it, If I were you, igual que “Así sea” o “Si yo fuera tú”

I suggest that he leave now." (no leaves), "It's essential that everyone be on time." (no is).

En BrE suena más formal; allí se dice a menudo "I suggest that he should leave" o, en lenguaje coloquial, "I suggest that he leaves".

"I suggest that he leave now. (not 'leaves')"
"It's essential that everyone be on time. (not 'is')"

Puedes omitir that ("I suggest he go"), pero la forma base se mantiene.

"She insisted that he apologize.", "The doctor recommended that she rest.", "The committee demanded that the report be revised." Nada de apologized ni was revised.

Suggest y propose no llevan objeto + infinitivo con to (con recommend solo es posible en BrE y es poco frecuente): “Te sugiero que llames” es "I suggest that you call" o "I suggest calling", no "I suggest you to call".

"She insisted that he apologize."
"The doctor recommended that she rest."
"The committee demanded that the report be revised."

Adjetivos que activan el subjuntivo

El mismo patrón aparece después de it's + ciertos adjetivos (essential, important, vital, necessary, crucial) + that: "It's essential that everyone be on time."

La negación es simplemente not delante de la forma base, sin do/does: "It's important that he not be late." Nunca "that he doesn't be late": doesn't y be no van juntos.

"It's essential that everyone be on time."
"It's important that he not be late."

Apréndelas enteras: "God save the Queen." (desde 2022, los británicos cantan "God save the King"), "So be it.", "If I were you, I'd apologize."

En español pasa lo mismo: “Dios salve a la Reina” y “Así sea” también usan el subjuntivo, y "So be it" es literalmente “Así sea”. "If I were you" corresponde a “Si yo fuera tú” (o “Yo que tú”): were para todas las personas, igual que fuera. En el habla cotidiana también se oye "If I was you", pero en inglés cuidado se usa were.

"God save the Queen."
"So be it."
"If I were you, I'd apologize."

Ejemplos del inglés real

"I propose that he attend the meeting."
"It's vital that she know the truth."
"They require that all visitors sign in."
"I request that the file be sent today."

Atención

✗I suggest that he leaves now.
✓I suggest that he leave now.

✗She insisted that he apologized.
✓She insisted that he apologize.

✗I suggest you to call tomorrow.
✓I suggest that you call tomorrow.

Usa that + sujeto + forma base, o suggest + -ing (I suggest calling tomorrow).

✗I want that you come to the meeting.
✓I want you to come to the meeting.

✗It's important that he doesn't be late.
✓It's important that he not be late.

"I suggest that he leave", "It's essential that everyone be on time".

Por eso es fácil escribir "She insisted that he apologized" o "They demanded that the report was revised". "She insisted that he apologize", "They demanded that the report be revised".

We ask that you remain seated"). Con want y hope nunca se usa that + forma base: "I want you to come" (no "I want that you come"), "I hope you're well"; y en el día a día, ask lleva objeto + to: "I'm asking you to call me".

💡 “Insistió en que se disculpara” → She insisted that he apologize.

💡 Negación: not delante de la forma base, como “que no llegue”: that he not be late.

Situación real: nuevas normas en la oficina

"Did you see the new policy?"

"Yeah — it says it's essential that every employee complete the training by Friday."

"What if someone can't make it?"

"HR insisted that we notify them in advance if that happens."
