You can borrow my car, provided that you fill up the tank.

  • provided that, providing, on condition that은 if보다 격식 있는 표현이에요.
  • as long as(“-기만 하면”, “-는 한”)와 unless(“-지 않는 한”)는 일상에서 써요
  • “-는 한”이 조건이면 as long as, 범위(“제가 아는 한”)면 as far as예요

unless는 “-지 않는 한”, “-지 않으면”이라는 뜻이에요: “I won't go unless you come with me.” = “같이 가 주지 않으면 저도 안 갈 거예요.” unless에 이미 부정의 뜻이 들어 있어서 뒤에는 긍정문을 써요: “unless you come”이지 “unless you don't come”이 아니에요.

영어 in case는 주로 대비를 나타내요: “Take an umbrella in case it rains.”(“비가 올지도 모르니 우산을 가져가세요.”) 일반적인 조건에는 if를 쓰세요: “If it rains, the match will be cancelled.”(미국 영어에서는 “In case you need help, call me”처럼 in case를 if처럼 쓰기도 하지만, if를 쓰면 틀릴 일이 없어요.)

"You can borrow my car, provided that you fill up the tank."
"You can stay out late, as long as you're careful."

격식 있는 표현: provided that, providing, on condition that

한국어의 “-는 조건으로”, “-는 경우에 한해”와 비슷한 느낌이에요. provided와 providing 뒤의 that은 생략할 수 있어요: provided you fill up the tank.

“-는 조건으로”는 “on condition that”이나 “on the condition that”(둘 다 흔해요)이고, 뒤에는 주어와 동사가 있는 절이 와요. “on condition to fill up”처럼 to부정사를 붙이거나 “with the condition that”이라고 하면 어색하거나 틀려요.

한국어 “아무 문제가 생기지 않는다면”에도 미래 표시가 없듯이, 영어도 현재시제를 써요: “We'll finish on time, providing nothing goes wrong.” “will go wrong”이 아니에요.

"The deal was approved, on condition that both parties sign."
"We'll finish on time, providing nothing goes wrong."

일상 표현: as long as

조건이면 “as long as you're careful”, 범위면 “as far as I know”예요. 조건에 as far as를 쓰면 틀려요. 또 맨 앞의 as도 표현의 일부라서 “long as”만 쓰지 않아요. 조금 더 격식 있는 so long as도 있어요.

"As long as you finish the report, you can leave early."
"I'll help you, as long as it doesn't take too long."

"You can join the team provided that you attend every practice."
"You can use my laptop as long as you're careful with it."
"You'll get a refund, provided that you keep the receipt."
"The contract is valid on condition that payment is received."

✗You can borrow my car, provided that you will fill up the tank.
✓You can borrow my car, provided that you fill up the tank.

Can I borrow your pen, on condition that I give it back tomorrow?
✓Can I borrow your pen? I'll give it back tomorrow.

✗As long as it won't rain, the event will go ahead.
✓As long as it doesn't rain, the event will go ahead.

✗I won't go unless you don't come with me.
✓I won't go unless you come with me.

✗As far as you're careful, you can use my laptop.
✓As long as you're careful, you can use my laptop.

한국어로는 둘 다 “-는 한”이지만, 조건은 as long as예요. as far as는 “as far as I know”처럼 범위를 말해요.

✗You can borrow my car, on condition to fill up the tank.
✓You can borrow my car, on condition that you fill up the tank.

In case it rains, the match will be cancelled.
✓If it rains, the match will be cancelled.

(Take an umbrella in case it rains).

조건 부분은 현재시제로 써요: “As long as it doesn't rain, the event will go ahead.”, “You'll get a refund, provided that you keep the receipt.” “미래의 일이니까 will”이라는 생각을 여기에 적용하지 마세요. will은 결과를 말하는 주절에만 써요. provided that, providing, on condition that, unless도 마찬가지예요.

그래서 뒤의 동사는 긍정형으로 써요: “I won't go unless you come with me.”

조건의 “-기만 하면”, “-는 한”은 as long as예요: “You can stay out late, as long as you're careful.” 범위의 “-는 한”은 as far as예요: “as far as I know”. 조건 문장에는 as far as를 쓰지 마세요.

사전에서 “경우”를 찾으면 case가 나오지만, “-ㄹ 경우”는 대부분 그냥 if예요: “If it rains, the match will be cancelled.” 영어 in case는 “-할지도 모르니까 미리”라는 대비의 뜻이에요: “Take an umbrella in case it rains.” 공식적인 글이라면 “in the event that”이나 “in the event of rain”도 쓸 수 있어요.

💡 “-는 조건으로” → provided (that), providing, on condition that(격식) / “-기만 하면”, “-는 한” → as long as(일상) / “-지 않는 한” → unless.

“비가 오지 않는 한”처럼 미래의 일이라도 will을 쓰지 않아요(as long as it doesn't rain).

💡 unless 뒤에는 긍정형(unless you come)을 써요. 조건의 “-는 한”은 as long as이고 as far as가 아니에요.

"Sure, as long as you're careful with it."

"Of course! And I'll bring it back Sunday, provided that the flight isn't delayed."

"Sounds good — just keep me posted."
