into the room、across the street、along the river。

目的地には to、ただし go home には to を付けない

英語はその逆で、動詞が動き方(walk、run、drive、swim)を表し、前置詞がルートを表します:walked into、swam across、drove through。

"She walked into the room.(中に入って終わる)"
"He walked across the street.(片側から反対側へ)"

put や sit なら in/on で十分なことも多いです(put it on the table)。 「部屋に入る」は enter the room で、“enter into the room” や “enter in the room” とは言いません。

"The cat jumped onto the table."
"She walked into the kitchen."
"He dropped his phone into the pool."

through、across、over:片側から反対側へ

「トンネルを通る」は through the tunnel、「泳いで川を渡る」は swim across the river です(水の中にいても across)。「〜を通って」「〜を経由して」も through です:“The train goes through several small towns.”(by だと「そばを通る」だけになります。)最後に、「〜を越えて」「〜の上を」は over です:“climbed over the fence”、“flew over the mountains”。橋については over を across と同じ意味で使うこともよくあります(walk over the bridge)。

"We drove through the tunnel."
"They walked across the bridge."
"The plane flew over the mountains."

「浜辺を歩く」「浜辺に沿って歩く」→ walk along the beach。

それに対して to は、日本語の「〜に/〜へ」のように目的地を表します:to Berlin、to the station。 「出口の方向に走った」を “ran to the exit direction” とするのは誤りで、“ran towards the exit” と言います。

大切な例外:「家に帰る」は go home で、to は付けません(walk home、drive home)。 同じように、there と here にも to は付けません:go there、come here。

坂や階段を上り下りするときは up と down を使います:「坂を下る」→ down the hill、「階段を上る」→ up the stairs。 The ball rolled down the hill(ボールが坂を転がり落ちた)。

"We walked along the beach for an hour."
"The car was heading towards the city center."

"He ran into the room, out of breath."
"The kids jumped onto the trampoline."
"We walked along the river until sunset."
"The ball rolled across the floor and under the sofa."

注意

✗She walked in the room and sat down.
✓She walked into the room and sat down.

✗We swam through the river to the other side.
✓We swam across the river to the other side.

✗He walked to the door, but stopped halfway.
✓He walked towards the door, but stopped halfway.

✗She entered into the room.
✓She entered the room.

She walked into the room。

✗I'm going to home now.
✓I'm going home now.

ほかの場所なら to を使います:to Berlin、to the station。

✗Let's go to there together.
✓Let's go there together.

「そこへ行く」の「へ」につられて to を付けがちですが、there と here は副詞なので to は不要です:go there、come here。

✗He ran to the exit direction.
✓He ran towards the exit.

「〜の方へ」は towards(アメリカ英語では toward)で表します。

英語はふつうその逆で、動詞が動き方、前置詞がルートを表します:“He ran into the room”、“They swam across the river”。“He entered the room running” も間違いではありませんが、重く聞こえます。

中へ入る移動 → into(プールに飛び込む:dive into the pool)。上に乗る移動 → onto(テーブルに飛び乗る:jump onto the table)。越える移動 → over(柵を飛び越える:jump over the fence)。「渡る」は、渡る面や空間なら across(道路、川、橋)、周りを囲まれているなら through(トンネル、森、人混み)。

目的地の「に/へ」は to です:to Berlin、to the station。go、drive、fly の後に at は使いません(“We're driving to Berlin tomorrow.”)。ただし home、there、here には to を付けません:go home、go there、come here。「〜の方へ」「〜に向かって」は towards(アメリカ英語では toward):“He ran towards the exit” で、“to the exit direction” とは言いません。

越える?over。

💡 「家に帰る」= go home、「そこへ行く」= go there(to なし)。

💡 「浜辺に沿って」= along、「トンネルを通って」= through、「出口の方へ」= towards。

"How do I get to the museum from here?"

"Walk along this street, then go through the park."

"And after the park?"

"Cross the bridge, and it's right there — you can't miss it."
