if 以外の条件表現(provided that / as long as / unless)

You can borrow my car, provided that you fill up the tank.

  • provided that、providing、on condition that は if よりかたい言い方(「〜という条件で」「〜ならば」)
  • as long as(「〜する限り」「〜さえすれば」)と unless(「〜しない限り」)は日常会話でよく使う

“I won't go unless you come with me.” “unless you come” であって、“unless you don't come” ではありません。

「雨の場合、試合は中止です」のような単純な条件は、英語では if で言います:“If it rains, the match will be cancelled.” なお、アメリカ英語では “In case you need help, call me” のように in case を if に近い意味で使うこともありますが、単純な条件なら if を使えば間違いありません。

"You can borrow my car, provided that you fill up the tank."
"You can stay out late, as long as you're careful."

かたい表現:provided that、providing、on condition that

provided と providing の後の that は省略できます:provided you fill up the tank。

“with the condition that” はあまり自然ではなく、“on condition to fill up the tank” のように to不定詞を続けることもできません。“provided that you fill up the tank” のように、that + 主語 + 動詞にします。

英語も同じで、条件の部分は現在形です:“We'll finish on time, providing nothing goes wrong.”(“will go wrong” ではありません)。

"The deal was approved, on condition that both parties sign."
"We'll finish on time, providing nothing goes wrong."

日常会話:as long as

“As long as it doesn't rain, the event will go ahead.”(雨が降らない限り、イベントは予定どおり行われます)のように、as long as の後は現在形です。“as long as it won't rain” とは言いません。will はメインの文(the event will go ahead)のほうに入ります。

「私の知る限り」は “as far as I know” で、こちらは「範囲」を表す as far as です。条件の「〜さえすれば」の意味では as long as を使い、“As far as you're careful, you can…”

"As long as you finish the report, you can leave early."
"I'll help you, as long as it doesn't take too long."

"You can join the team provided that you attend every practice."
"You can use my laptop as long as you're careful with it."
"You'll get a refund, provided that you keep the receipt."
"The contract is valid on condition that payment is received."

注意

✗As long as it won't rain, the event will go ahead.
✓As long as it doesn't rain, the event will go ahead.

as long as の後も現在形で、will は使いません。

✗You can borrow my car, provided that you will fill up the tank.
✓You can borrow my car, provided that you fill up the tank.

✗I won't go unless you don't come with me.
✓I won't go unless you come with me.

✗As far as you're careful, you can use my laptop.
✓As long as you're careful, you can use my laptop.

as far as は “as far as I know” のように範囲を表します。

✗You can borrow my car, on condition to fill up the tank.
✓You can borrow my car, on condition that you fill up the tank.

Can I borrow your pen, on condition that I give it back tomorrow?
✓Can I borrow your pen? I'll give it back tomorrow.

“As long as it doesn't rain, the event will go ahead.”、“You'll get a refund, provided that you keep the receipt.” provided that、providing、on condition that、unless

そのため後ろの動詞は肯定の形にします:“I won't go unless you come with me.”

条件の「〜さえすれば」は as long as:“You can stay out late, as long as you're careful.” 範囲の「〜の限りでは」は as far as:“as far as I know”。

💡 「〜という条件で」→ provided (that)、providing、on condition that(かたい)/「〜する限り」「〜さえすれば」→ as long as(日常)/「〜しない限り」→ unless。

日本語の「降らない限り」と同じで、未来のことでも will は入れません(as long as it doesn't rain)。

💡 unless の後は肯定形(unless you come)。条件の「限り」は as long as で、as far as ではありません。

"Can I borrow your camera for the trip?"

"Sure, as long as you're careful with it."

"Of course! And I'll bring it back Sunday, provided that the flight isn't delayed."

"Sounds good — just keep me posted."
