It was John who broke the vase. What I need is a coffee.

  • It-clefts: It was/is + elemento destacado + that/who …
  • Wh-clefts: What + oración + is/was + elemento destacado
  • All (that) sustituye a what con el sentido de “lo único que”, nunca “all what”

"Plain: John broke the vase."
"Cleft: It was John who broke the vase. (y no otra persona)"

It-clefts

Un it-cleft empieza con It is/was, sigue el elemento destacado y luego that (con personas también who). “Was John who broke the vase” es incorrecto.

Además, it is/was va siempre en singular: “Fueron mis padres quienes lo pagaron” es It was my parents who paid for it, no “It were”. It isn't money that makes people happy. Con tiempo y lugar, that es la opción segura: It was yesterday that I lost my keys; It was in Paris that we met. (En inglés informal también se oye when/where, como el “cuando/donde” del español, pero that siempre es correcto. Lo que nunca va es which, y con un lugar tampoco who.) Si el elemento destacado es el objeto, en la conversación se puede omitir that/who: It wasn't Sam (that) I was annoyed with.

“Fui yo quien…” no es “Was I who…” ni “I was who…”, sino It was me who… (muy formal: It was I who…). En negativo: It wasn't me who said that.

"It was John who broke the vase."
"It was yesterday that I lost my keys."
"It was in Paris that we met."

Wh-clefts

No añadas un it antes de is (“What I need it is…” es incorrecto) y no pongas coma antes de is.

All sustituye a what con el sentido de “lo único que”: All I want is peace and quiet. “Todo lo que quiero” es All I want (o All that I want), nunca “All what I want”.

"What I need is a coffee."
"What surprised me was this."
"All I want is peace and quiet."

Ejemplos del inglés real

"It isn't money that makes people happy."
"What bothers me is his attitude."
"It wasn't me who said that."
"What will make you improve is practice."

Atención

✗Was John who broke the vase.
✓It was John who broke the vase.

✗What I need it is a coffee.
✓What I need is a coffee.

En un wh-cleft, la oración con what ya es el sujeto: no añadas it antes de is/was.

✗It isn't money what makes people happy.
✓It isn't money that makes people happy.

“…lo que hace feliz a la gente” invita a usar what, pero en un it-cleft va that (o who con personas).

✗All what I want is peace and quiet.
✓All I want is peace and quiet.

“Todo lo que quiero” → All I want o All that I want. “All what” es incorrecto en inglés estándar.

✗It were my parents who paid for it.
✓It was my parents who paid for it.

En inglés necesitas el sujeto it, y el verbo se queda en singular aunque lo destacado sea plural: "It was John who broke the vase", "It was my parents who paid for it". Ni "Was John who…" ni "It were my parents…".

Pero en un it-cleft se usa that (o who con personas), nunca what: "It isn't money that makes people happy". Y “todo lo que” es All (that), no "All what".

“Fui yo quien lo dijo”, “No fui yo”

El inglés usa el mismo marco que siempre: "It was me who said that", "It wasn't me". En el inglés cotidiano se dice me; It was I who… existe, pero suena muy formal.

💡 It-cleft: It is/was + elemento + that/who. Nunca sin it, nunca con what, siempre en singular.

💡 Wh-cleft: “Lo que necesito es…” → What I need is…, sin it extra antes de is.

💡 “Todo lo que” → All (that), nunca “all what”.

Situación real: aclarar un malentendido

"I heard you were annoyed with Sam."

"No, it wasn't Sam I was annoyed with — it was his manager."

"Oh! What happened exactly?"

"What happened is he cancelled the meeting twice without telling anyone."
