Präpositionen: AmE und BrE

B1 · MittelstufeAmerikanisches und britisches Englisch

At the weekend oder on the weekend — gleiche Bedeutung, andere Präposition.

  • Britisch heißt es „at the weekend“, amerikanisch „on the weekend“ — das britische at passt zu „am Wochenende“
  • Britisch „fill in a form“, amerikanisch „fill out a form“ — „ausfüllen“ passt zur amerikanischen Variante; „fill up“ ist falsch
  • Britisch „Monday to Friday“, amerikanisch „Monday through Friday“ — für „Montag bis Freitag“ nicht „until“
  • Britisch „in a team“, amerikanisch „on a team“

"Britisch: at the weekend / Amerikanisch: on the weekend"
"Britisch: fill in a form / Amerikanisch: fill out a form"

Britisches Englisch sagt at the weekend und Monday to Friday; amerikanisches Englisch sagt on the weekend und Monday through Friday (through macht klar, dass der Freitag mitzählt).

Vorsicht beim deutschen „bis“: Bei Zeiträumen von Tagen heißt es to oder through, nicht „Monday until Friday“. Until benutzt du für einen Endzeitpunkt: „The shop is open until six.“

"Britisch: I'll see you at the weekend."
"Amerikanisch: I'll see you on the weekend."
"Britisch: The store is open Monday to Saturday."
"Amerikanisch: The store is open Monday through Saturday."

"Britisch: Fill in your details here. / Amerikanisch: Fill out your details here."
"Britisch: She plays in the national team. / Amerikanisch: She plays on the national team."

Beispiele aus dem echten Englisch

"British: Could you fill in this form and hand it back to me at the weekend?"
"American: Could you fill out this form and hand it back to me on the weekend?"
"British: The gym is open Monday to Friday, and she plays in the staff football team."
"American: The gym is open Monday through Friday, and she plays on the staff soccer team."

Achtung

✗'On the weekend' is incorrect — it should always be 'at the weekend.'
✓Both are correct: 'at the weekend' is British, 'on the weekend' is American.

✗Please fill in out this form.
✓Please fill in this form. (British) OR Please fill out this form. (American)

✗The result is different as I expected.
✓The result is different from what I expected.

„Anders als“ wird nicht zu „different as“. Sicher ist different from; amerikanisch auch different than, britisch auch different to.

✗Let's meet at half eleven. (meaning 10:30)
✓Let's meet at half past ten.

„Halb elf“ ist 10:30 = half past ten, britisch kurz half ten. „Half eleven“ wäre 11:30.

✗Please fill up this form.
✓Please fill in this form.

Fill up heißt „auffüllen, volltanken“.

Amerikanisch sagt man meist einfach "ten thirty".

Im Englischen geht "different as" in keiner Variante. Sicher in beiden ist "different from"; amerikanisch ist zusätzlich "different than" üblich, britisch "different to". Vor einem Nebensatz: "different from what I expected" (oder amerikanisch "different than I expected").

Für einen Zeitraum von Tagen sagt man britisch "Monday to Friday" (oder "from Monday to Friday"), amerikanisch "Monday through Friday". "Open Monday until Friday" klingt in beiden Varianten unnatürlich.

💡 „Am Wochenende“ → at the weekend (britisch) oder on the weekend (amerikanisch) — nie in the weekend.

💡 „Halb elf“ = half past ten (britisch kurz: half ten) = 10:30.

Alltagssituation — Formulare im Ausland

"The receptionist asked me to fill out this form, but I kept writing 'fill in' out of habit."

"Ha, that happens — it's the same form either way, just a different verb depending on where you are."

"Good to know. Anything else I should watch for while I'm here?"

"Just listen for 'on the weekend' instead of 'at the weekend' — that one trips people up too."
