Spaltsätze (Cleft Sentences)

C1 · FortgeschrittenFortgeschrittene Grammatik

It was John who broke the vase. What I need is a coffee.

  • It-clefts: It was/is + hervorgehobenes Element + that/who …
  • Wh-clefts (Pseudo-Spaltsätze): What + Satz + is/was + hervorgehobenes Element
  • All (that) ersetzt what im Sinne von „das Einzige, was“ — nie „all what“

"Plain: John broke the vase."
"Cleft: It was John who broke the vase. (not someone else)"

It-clefts

Ein it-cleft beginnt mit It is/was, dann folgt das hervorgehobene Element, dann that (bei Personen auch who).

It was yesterday that I lost my keys; It was in Paris that we met. (In lockerer Sprache hört man auch when/where, aber that ist immer richtig.) Bei Personen geht who oder that. Ist das hervorgehobene Element das Objekt, kann that/who im Gespräch auch wegfallen: It wasn't Sam (that) I was annoyed with.

„Ich war es, der …“ wird nicht zu „I was it who …“, sondern zu It was me who … (sehr formell: It was I who …). Verneint: It wasn't me who said that.

"It was John who broke the vase."
"It was yesterday that I lost my keys."
"It was in Paris that we met."

Kein „that what“ für „das, was“ — what allein reicht. Und kein zusätzliches it vor is.

All ersetzt what im Sinne von „das Einzige, was“: All I want is peace and quiet. „Alles, was ich will“ heißt also All I want (oder All that I want) — nie „All what I want“.

"What I need is a coffee."
"What surprised me was this."
"All I want is peace and quiet."

Beispiele aus dem echten Englisch

"It's not money that can buy happiness."
"What bothers me is his attitude."
"It wasn't me who said that."
"What will make you improve is practice."

Achtung

✗Was John who broke the vase.
✓It was John who broke the vase.

✗What I need it is a coffee.
✓What I need is a coffee.

Im wh-cleft ist der what-Satz selbst das Subjekt — vor is/was kommt kein zusätzliches it.

✗It's not money what can buy happiness.
✓It's not money that can buy happiness.

„Es ist nicht das Geld, was …“ verleitet zu what. Im it-cleft steht that (bei Personen auch who), nie what.

✗All what I want is peace and quiet.
✓All I want is peace and quiet.

„Alles, was ich will“ → All I want oder All that I want. „All what“ ist im Standardenglisch falsch.

✗It were my parents who paid for it.
✓It was my parents who paid for it.

„Es waren meine Eltern, die …“ — im Englischen bleibt it is/was im Singular, auch wenn das hervorgehobene Element im Plural steht.

Vergleich mit deiner Sprache

„Das, was ich brauche, ist …“, „Alles, was ich will, ist …“ — im Deutschen steht oft ein Bezugswort vor „was“, und vor „ist“ steht ein Komma

Im Englischen übernimmt what allein die Rolle von „das, was“: "What I need is a coffee" — nicht "That what I need" oder "The thing what I need" (möglich ist The thing (that) I need). Für „alles, was“ steht All (that): "All I want is peace and quiet", nie "All what I want".

Im Englischen bleibt der Rahmen fest: It is/was (immer Singular) + Element + that/who. Also "It was my parents who paid for it", "It's not money that can buy happiness" — nicht "It were …" und nicht "… what can buy …".

💡 It-cleft: It is/was + Element + that/who — it nie weglassen, nie what, immer Singular.

💡 Wh-cleft: „Was ich brauche, ist …“ → What I need is … — ohne Komma, ohne „that what“, ohne extra it.

Alltagssituation — ein Missverständnis klären

"I heard you were annoyed with Sam."

"No, it wasn't Sam I was annoyed with — it was his manager."

"Oh! What happened exactly?"

"What happened is he cancelled the meeting twice without telling anyone."
