Phone Numbers

A1 · BeginnerEnglish Basics

Learn how to say, hear and confirm phone numbers clearly in English.

What you'll learn

  • Say digits individually or in small groups
  • Zero vs "oh"
  • Basic area-code grouping
  • How to ask for and confirm a number

Say digits individually

Phone numbers are normally communicated digit by digit or in small groups — not as one large number.

(312) 555-0147

three one two, five five five, zero one four seven

Fictional example number

Lingverly uses only clearly fictional numbers, from the reserved 555-01xx North American range.

Zero / "oh"

0 can be said "zero".

In informal number strings, speakers may also say "oh".

For learners, "zero" is always a clear, safe choice — "oh" is not required.

"Double"

33 → three three

or, in some varieties/situations → double three

Saying each digit separately is always clear internationally. "Double" is especially common in British-style spoken number strings, but it isn't required.

Area code and grouping

(312) 555-0147

area code: 312

This is a basic practical overview — local dialing rules vary and change over time, so this lesson doesn't assume a fixed rule for every area.

Asking and confirming

What's your phone number?

Could you repeat that, please?

Could you say that again?

Was that five or nine?

Let me read that back to you.

"What's your phone number?"

"It's three one two, five five five, zero one four seven."

Country codes

+1, +44, etc. are country calling codes.

We say "plus": +1 → plus one.

This lesson doesn't list every country code — you don't need to memorize them.

Real life

Bookings, forms, business calls, contact exchanges — always with fictional numbers here.

"Could I get a contact number for the booking?"

"Sure — three one two, five five five, zero one four seven."
