Month order

January→February→March→April→May→June→July→August→September→October→November→December

What comes after March?

What comes before August?

What is the first month?

What is the last month?

Capital letters

Month names always begin with a capital letter.

Correct

January, April, September

Incorrect

january, april, september

My birthday is in May.

School starts in September.

Using "in" with months

English uses in before a month name.

in Januaryin Marchin Julyin December

"My birthday is in June."

"It is cold here in January."

"We travel in August."

We don't say "on January" for a month alone. A specific date, like on January 10, is different — you'll meet that in the Dates in English lesson.

Difficult spellings

A few month names are easy to misspell: January, February, August, September, November, December. Many speakers drop the first "r" in February when they speak, but it is always written: F-E-B-R-U-A-R-Y. January and February both end in -uary.

Months and seasons

Winter

December, January, February

Spring

March, April, May

Summer

June, July, August

Fall / Autumn

September, October, November

This grouping is for the Northern Hemisphere (like the US and most of Europe). In the Southern Hemisphere (like Australia or Argentina), the seasons are reversed — December falls in summer, not winter. These are not universal, global seasons.

Lingverly is American-English-first, so we use fall as the main US term for this season. Autumn is also completely standard English, especially in British English.

Real life

"When is your birthday?"

"It's in October."

"When is your vacation?"

"It's in July."

"My birthday is in March."

"The course starts in September."

"Christmas is in December."
