Backshift of Tenses

B1 · IntermediateReported Speech

"I work here," she said. → She said she worked there.

What you'll learn

  • When the reporting verb is in the past ('said', 'told'), the reported verb usually moves one step further into the past
  • Present simple → past simple; present continuous → past continuous; present perfect → past perfect
  • Past simple → past perfect; modals shift too: will→would, can→could, may→might, must→had to
  • A form that's already 'as far back as it can go' (like past perfect) doesn't change further

Why tenses shift

When you report what someone said using a past reporting verb ('said', 'told'), the tense of the reported verb usually shifts one step further into the past too. This is called backshift, and it reflects that time has moved on since the original words were spoken.

""I work here," she said. → She said she worked there."

The full shift pattern

Present simple shifts to past simple. Present continuous shifts to past continuous. Present perfect shifts to past perfect. Past simple shifts to past perfect. Present perfect continuous shifts to past perfect continuous.

""I work here." → He said he worked there."
""I am studying." → She said she was studying."
""I have eaten." → He said he had eaten."
""I finished it." → She said she had finished it."

Real English

"He said he had been waiting for an hour."
"She said she might be late."
"He said he had to finish it that day."
"She said she was going to visit them."

Watch out

✗He said he works there.
✓He said he worked there.

After a past reporting verb, present simple normally backshifts to past simple.

✗She said she can help.
✓She said she could help.

Modal verbs backshift too — 'can' becomes 'could' after a past reporting verb.

✗She said she had had finished it.
✓She said she had finished it.

Past simple shifts to past perfect once — don't add an extra 'had' on top of a form that's already shifted.

Real life — Recapping a phone call

"What did the doctor say?"

"She said I had a mild infection and that I should rest for a few days."

"Did she say if you needed medicine?"

"Yeah, she said she would send a prescription to the pharmacy."
