Common Abbreviations

A1–A2 · BeginnerEnglish Basics

Learn common shortened forms you will see in everyday English, addresses, time, measurements and messages.

What you'll learn

  • What an abbreviation is
  • Initialisms and acronyms
  • Common address, title and measurement abbreviations
  • e.g., i.e. and etc.

What is an abbreviation?

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase.

Dr. → Doctor

St. → Street (in an address)

Ave. → Avenue

approx. → approximately

Punctuation isn't identical across every style guide — some style guides drop the periods.

Initialisms and acronyms

Some shortened names are said letter by letter:

U-S-AF-B-IT-VA-I

Not every initialism is an acronym. An acronym is pronounced as a word — like NASA ("nassa"), not "N-A-S-A". Many initialisms, like USA or FBI, are pronounced letter by letter instead. This terminology is secondary — the important skill is recognizing them.

Time

a.m.p.m.

Capitalization and punctuation styles vary — AM, a.m., am — but the meaning is the same. See AM and PM for the full lesson.

Addresses

St.Street
Ave.Avenue
Rd.Road
Blvd.Boulevard
Apt.Apartment

A practical set of examples — not a full postal-standard master list.

Titles

Mr.Mrs.Ms.Dr.

Punctuation varies between American and British style — Lingverly uses its US style consistently. Ms. is simply a standard title for a woman; it doesn't indicate marital status.

Measurements

ininch
ftfoot/feet
lbpound
ozounce
mimile
kmkilometer
kgkilogram
Lliter
mLmilliliter

Important distinction: kg, km, mL and L aren't abbreviations in the traditional sense — they're SI unit symbols, and that's why they follow their own rule: unit symbols normally stay unchanged for plural quantities (5 kg, not 5 kgs). See Basic Measurements for the full lesson.

Common written abbreviations

e.g. → for example

i.e. → that is / in other words

etc. → and so on

approx. → approximately

These are useful to recognize in writing — no need to overuse this Latin-derived terminology yourself.

Real life

Forms, maps and addresses, schedules, measurements, workplace notes — abbreviations are everywhere.
